DFE publishes updated Privacy Notices for Schools and Local Authorities

13 May 2016

On 26 April 2016, the Department for Education (DfE) published updated suggested forms of privacy notice, for schools and local authorities to issue to individuals including staff, parents and pupils about the collection of personal data. The updated model privacy notices include suggested text to:

  • Notify pupils and the school workforce through brochures or noticeboards.
  • Display on a local authority's website.
  • Explain the uses of information held about looked after children and children in need.

The suggested forms of privacy notices are intended to enable schools and local authorities to fulfil their obligations under the Data Protection Act 1998. They are an update of the suggested privacy notices last issued by the DfE in July 2015 and are presumably intended to reflect proposed wider changes to privacy notices best practice.
