New asthma toolkit for schools

Healthy London Partnership has launched a new asthma toolkit to support schools in London to provide the best care for pupils and students with asthma.

The online toolkit aims to provide head teachers, teachers, specialist educational needs co-ordinators and school nurses with easy access to all the practical resources, guidance and information they will need to support children with asthma in their school.

It includes practical downloadable tools and advice, including a template school asthma policy and a school asthma register, as well as examples of best practice in children’s asthma care from schools in London.

The toolkit also highlights how schools can order inhalers from their pharmacy to ensure they have an emergency supply on site at all times.

More than 200,000 children and young people have asthma in London – that’s three children in every classroom.

There are inconsistencies across London in children’s asthma care and the toolkit includes sections for pharmacists, GPs, commissioners, hospital staff and parents and carers of children with asthma.

The toolkit, which is based on the London asthma standards for children and young people, has been launched following testing by users across London.

It can be found at www.healthylondon.org/asthmatoolkit
